Update: 5 Things On The 5th (December 2018)

I gave an extra day to write this month's 5 Things because today is Epiphany! #OkayEmily you're not Catholic, what's up with that? Well, Epiphany is the end of the Christmas season. It's twelve days after Christmas, so you celebrate twelve whole days and then get Epiphany at the end. Catholic people believe that the Wise Men showed up at the stable on January 6th, and celebrate in their own ways. But it's also Armenian and Eastern Orthodox Christmas. And it's also literally the day I met my own Armenian. I don't talk to him anymore, but we mention his name so often that he might as well still be here, getting up to crazy things. So here's to you, Garo. In the midst of the crappiest time of my life, you showed up at work anyway despite being hungover, and you made my days in NYC the best they could ever be. Here are my 5 things for December 2018: I played in a recital for the first time since that fateful day in 2010. It was exactly what I needed: m...

Update: 2018's End Of Year Review

2011 + 2012 + 2013 + 2014 + 2015 + 2016 + 2017  Official End Of Year Review -- 2018 The scent of you, carried along by the wind When I touch your cheek, it's freezing It's completely unbelievable --  we're meeting again. It's a beautiful, beautiful life...   1. What did you do in 2018 that you'd never done before?: I think the biggest thing for me is that I was able to go to therapy! Not like HARDCORE CBT or anything like that, I've always been able to dig myself out of that. But I was able to go to career counseling to figure out what I ACTUALLY want to do with my music talent, instead of just letting everybody else mold it. I lost a major project I wanted to be in at the beginning of the year due to a micromanaging leader who took what was supposed to be mine and made it hers. Later on, I lost the Akiba Idol Emily project because I started it for the wrong reasons, which of course led to a massive mental breakdown WHILE at Matsuricon . Neve...

Update: 5 Things On The 5th (November 2018)

So clearly this is not getting posted in November. What did I do in October? I continued to practice piano. I wrote a few things, and I even published a piece of sheet music for the first time ever. I spent most of my time prepping for NaNo and hoping that my entire month wouldn't dive-bonb. And it didn't...kind of. My big focus over the month was to get to a million words over my 15 years of doing NaNo. It would take about 77K to do so, and it took some extra time and some major stress, but I got there. I also finished my book for this year! You'll get to read it soon...really soon :D One of my closest friends was kicked out of her house by her husband, so I got to help her move. She's staying at Mikkun's for now and will find her own place soon, but I'm glad I was able to help her. I went to Thanksgiving with my grandma! It was the two of us and my uncle, and it was really chill and lots of fun. I got to include them in my Macy's and Dog Show TV tr...

Update: 5 Things On The 5th (September 2018)

A little behind again with this, as I actually thought about it the day of -- and then proceeded to get slammed at work. That's how life goes sometimes. Anywho, this is my monthly list of 5 interesting things that happened, or 5 things I was able to accomplish in spite of my own busy schedule. When I look back ten years from now, I want to see all of the cool things that happened to me in this period of my life. I started posting spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment videos of myself playing piano on Instagram! You can follow them here. You don't have to, like, follow me or anything, but it's still something I'm kind of proud of. On that note, I really got into the hang of posting more J-Pop covers. The catch is that nobody knows where they are yet! They're out on the Internet somewhere (which means they're on SoundCloud) but only one person knows my username (Mikkun). I'm doing that on purpose. I want to sing, but I don't want to over-promote myself and b...

Update: #OkayEmily But What Is d-VOR-ak???

TL;DR welcome to the Survival Strategies, everyone. Been a while. But I know there are a LOT of you who have absolutely no clue as to what I'm doing or how I'm doing it. #OkayEmily you were just an idol and now you're publishing a book series? The word you're looking for is published, and Dvorak has a LOT more history than you would think. So let's start at the very beginning: In 2013, my hands were killing me, so I started switching to the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, which I still use sometimes (I switch on and off). I wanted a way to learn it fast, to get used to it so I could switch over. So I decided to participate in National Novel Writing Month's Camp event in April of 2013, writing a 50,000 word novel in Dvorak. And when I realized I had no plot, I quickly figured out this was no problem: Dvorak is an interactive project. Everyday during April, I will be making regular quota for (National Novel Writing Month) using Dvorak. That’s 1,667 words per day....

Update: 5 Things On The 5th (August 2018)

Okay, so it's a couple of days late, but I was so stressed out last night that I actually got sick. It's a miracle in itself that I'm still awake. Regardless, here are my 5 things I did in the month of August! What's funny is that you probably know most of these already, because a lot of them happened at Matsuricon. I staffed my first anime convention! It was way less stressful than I thought it would be...despite the fact that my body and mind thought it was, LOL. I sang an Akiba Idol Emily song for the first and last time in front of a crowd! It was completely unexpected, but I'm glad I got to sing at least once before I retire the project for good and put my idol days behind me. (That's a whole 'nother story, but I got this.) I went to go see Teddyloid in concert at Matsuricon! I don't really go to concerts, and I really don't go to concerts or anything for Japanese acts. I'm too embarrassed to. But this was one exception I really wante...

Update -- Matsuricon 2018 Recap

I arrived at Ohayocon 2018 as Akiba Idol Emily. I was there to kick ass and take names, and I was ready. I was in full idol costume wherever I went, and I had business cards to give out to con goers. I did everything from both raves to all sorts of different panels, stopping short of a guerrilla live solely because I wasn't sure how an industry-based con would deal. I had just come out with my second single as AIE, and I was enjoying life and where my Japanese idol career would take me.  And she was by my side the entire time, and together, we were invincible. I felt like I could do anything with my best friend, my biggest fan, by my side. Someday, she would be an idol with me, and together we would conquer the world. And then it all came crashing down around me. The person who said that she loved me so much never actually loved me at all, hidden behind faulty mental fabric and uncorrected chemistry and the blatant refusal to seek help. So I did what I do best: I destroyed my...
